Background
The idea of having an all girls secondary school in the northern region was put forth by the bishop of Mzuzu to promote the education of young girls. In 1960 the Ministry of Education offered to the MIC sisters a grant for the construction of such a school.
The official opening of the school took place on January 29th, 1963, with girls coming from Karonga Secondary School, HHI and St Mary's in Zomba. Marymount was from the beginning a full secondary school with students on forms I, II and III. There were three classrooms, a Biology lab, a small room for needlework, one dormitory and the dining hall. The headmistress was Sr. Jacqueline Bastien, then known as Sir Joseph of the Sacred Heart. Father M. de Repentigny was chaplain and supervised the terracing of the grounds. Sr. Yvette Belanger was superior of Mzuzu Convent and as bursar of Marymount, she played an important role in the beginnings of the school.
